Leaving Cork/Youth hostels are great

So last night I went out and got (terrible) chinese food and I'm sitting in the hostels didng room having a pint and "eating" when another guest asks if I have a lighter to light the stove. I went and found one but the stove wouldn't light. It took a crowd of us quite a while to get it to light (How many hostelers does it take to light a stove?) Anyway so we get it lit and I go back to my Chinese and Guinness. A few minutes later she comes over and offers me a traditional Swiss meal because I helped light the stove. So that was dinners 1 and 2 And I got to make two new friends Tabita and Evalyn (sorry if I you this and I spelled that wrong). Anyway we're eating and an Italian guy comes up and asks to use the lighter-no problem I hand it over and go back to eating. few minutes later him and his friends come over with yet another plate of food! That was dinner #3-and made another 3 friends (Marco, Garacamo & Geracamo-again sorry if I spell those wrong I can't find the paper you wrote them down on but I will). Anyway suffice to say kitchens are were it's at for youth hostels-but next time I need to be cooking a traditional American meal. Any thoughts? Please post some easy traveler friendly recipes and I'll see what happens. Anyway off to Dingle now in a few minutes. See ya!

  1. Hi Seamus,
If you can get some chicken pieces, onion, cooking oil, flour & salt pepper and rice. A bottle of white wine helps.
Coat the chicken pieces in flour and brown in oil on all sides - add cut up onion salt and pepper and a little white wine and some water. Cook over low heat for about 15 minutes. If you can - make some packaged rice, add a green veg or salad. Hope this helps. Love Grandma

  2. Excellent - I am glad you are getting into the mode of walk about!

American food - well, there's hamburgers, but that's kind of cliched - mac and cheese is always good for crowds (and there's great cheese in Ireland, or if you are really adventurous and there's a fryer, fried chicken!

    I'd go with Grandma's suggestion.

PS I am enjoying my vicarious travels with you!

  4. I ended up cooking grilled chicken rubbed with salt, pepper & garlic powder (came out awesome-juicy & tasty. Hell yeah). With it I did dad's onions and potatoes except I added carrots, sprinkled hot curry powder, red pepper, garlic, salt and pepper (curry powder and red pepper powder were the only hot spices I had and it needed to be hot. Also as it was cooking threw in some balsamic vinegar, covered it and let it go. Just did simple chiabatta bread with salad. I wasn't sure how it was going to go but came out great! (dad you should send me your actual recipe so I can really make it)

  5. Sounds yummy - you'll have to cook it for me sometime.

Perhaps I should have given you a bottle of Dave's Insanity Sauce to travel with.

  7. I can send it to Tante Regina if you like. It's a nook, though - but you can get email and internet and even a few apps. It's a color one.
